Coming Out Of The Shadows: Undocumented Immigrants Demand Administrative Relief In Denver

Posted by CAD2012

(Denver, CO) – Undocumented immigrants walking across the United States will rally outside the Obama campaign office on Tuesday, demanding that his administration stops the deportation of DREAM Act eligible youth by signing an executive order granting administrative relief.

The group, Campaign for an American DREAM (CAD), will deliver a letter to his campaign office followed by a “Coming out of the Shadows” rally where undocumented immigrants will publicly declare their status. The immigrant rights community from Denver will be joining them in support of their arrival and the rally.

“With deportations on the rise and Secure Communities recent enforcement in the state of Colorado, we cannot just sit back and wait!” said Veronica Gomez, an undocumented student with CAD. “The immigrant community in Colorado needs to know that we have a voice in this country, that we are not criminals, and we deserve a pathway to legalization.”

The six walkers live in different parts of the country and came together to show unity, equality, and diversity to all communities by sharing their stories and struggles. They will arrive in Washington, D.C. on November 2nd, four days before the national election.

Despite the John Morton memo explaining that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is only deporting criminals, DREAM-eligible youth and students are being put in deportation proceedings nationwide. Administrative relief would halt deportations until Congress decides to move on passing a comprehensive and fair immigration reform with an earned pathway toward legalization.

CAD is a walk to motivate those communities living in fear, asking them to step out of the shadows and learn ways to defend the immigrant community. The Presidential election has both parties fighting for the Latino vote as CAD pushes the current administration to stop the criminalization of youth who were brought here at a young age and meet other requirements in the DREAM Act.

“If they want the Latino vote in Colorado, they must show the community what they are doing for us and we are asking them to stop the deportations of all DREAM eligible youth!” said Javier Hernandez, an undocumented immigrant living in the state and co-founder of Colorado, Organize, Resist, Escalate (COORE).
